Period: 19th century
Description: Antique watercolor with a gilded wooden frame depicting the Amalfi Coast signed Francesco Lord Mancini. Francesco Mancini - also known as Francesco Lord Mancini - enrolled in the Royal Institute of Fine Arts in Naples in 1844, at the age of fourteen, in the drawing class and from 1846 in the landscape class, under the guidance of the painter Gabriele Smargiassi. He presented at the Bourbon Exhibition of 1851 a Landscape Study from Villa Gallo in Capodimonte; at that of 1855 a Landscape with rocks, figures and herds and Crusaders cutting wood in a forest to build war machines; at that of 1859 the painting At the Ford (Naples, Royal Palace). He participated in the National Exhibition of Florence in 1861 with scenes of the Risorgimento. He exhibited there: Episode of October 1, 1860 on the plains of Capua, Garibaldi's Rest, and Garibaldini in the forests of Calabria. This pictorial production, linked to the events of Italian unification, represents an interlude in his artistic activity. His paintings Vanguard of Garibaldini and Bersaglieri in Action are today preserved at the Municipality of Naples. At the end of the fifties, Francesco Mancini abandoned academic themes to dedicate himself to painting from life. He attended Filippo Palizzi's studio, who invited him to a more direct and close relationship with nature and urged him to draw directly from life, painting outdoors. Around 1858, he thus began a series of trips to the surroundings of Naples, in Puglia, Calabria and Abruzzo, in search of new landscapes to paint, with meticulous attention to naturalistic details, in order to make the vision of reality more perceptible. He came into contact with the group of painters who identified with the Resina School, also known as the Republic of Portici. After his stays in London, he obtained the nickname Lord, for his elegance - almost English - and also to distinguish him from the painter of the same name, Francesco Mancini, active in the 17th and 18th centuries.
